 READ HOSEA 7

GO DEEPER

God's original intention was to save Israel, but as we can see in this chapter, the nation was unwilling to forsake their sinful ways. Not only were they unrepentant, but they were so deeply immersed in sin that they were oblivious to it. Hosea uses various metaphors in verse 8 to demonstrate this: a burnt cake with one side charred, strength taken from a once-able body, and gray hairs overtaking a man's head. In response to these illustrations, Israel's reaction remained the same: "He knows it not."

As human beings, we have the capability to deceive ourselves when we are in sin, and this is precisely the predicament in which Israel finds itself. They recognize that they are facing a problem: God's favor has departed from them, leading to immense hardships. However, they fail to acknowledge the role of their own sin and disobedience in reaching this point. God wanted to heal Israel from sin and its consequences, but only if they acknowledged and addressed their sin.

We are no different from Israel. Similarly, our pride often compels us to conceal our sins, believing it is saferer than confronting the discomfort of repentance. According to 1 John 1:8–9, denying our sins is self-deception, while confession and repentance pave the way for forgiveness and cleansing. Confession and repentance are pathways to healing and security. John says, If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:8, 9).

Hosea cautions Israel against abandoning the safety of God and seeking solutions in the world. He concludes in verse 16 by likening them to a "treacherous bow" - a useless and dangerous weapon that misses its target entirely. God's desire is to redeem us, so let us boldly and consistently confess our sins so that we can live in freedom.
