 READ GENESIS 12

GO DEEPER

In verse one of chapter 12, God declares His decision to start afresh and create a new world. His intention is to establish a powerful nation of His own, starting with Abram. The meeting between Abram and God is a crucial moment in history, as it leads to the birth of the Savior for all people through this chosen nation.

Before God's call, the Bible gives no information about Abram's character. There is no indication that Abram and Sarai sought other gods in their polytheistic society, but it is clear that God sought them out. God commands Abram to leave everything behind and promises to make him into a great nation, blessed and protected, with a purpose to be a blessing to others, despite Abram's lack of prestige, offspring, resources, or followers.

Abram's obedience and faith in God's promises led him to embark on a journey without knowing the destination, trusting that God would fulfill His word. Although flawed like all humans, Abram's faith and obedience played a significant role in God's plan. By walking faithfully and obediently with God, even in uncertainty, Abram found his way.

Similarly, we are called to trust in God's unwavering promises and to walk faithfully and obediently with Him. God is faithful, and His promises never fail. Let us journey with Him, trusting that He will lead us to our destination.

QUESTIONS

1. What lessons can be drawn from Abram's obedience (v. 1-9) and disobedience (v. 10-20)?

2. Why do you suppose Abram felt the need to deceive Pharaoh?

3. If you feel a calling to depart for a specific place, purpose, or person, what obstacles might be hindering you from demonstrating steadfast obedience?
