 READ GENESIS 14

GO DEEPER

In today’s narrative, we are presented with a divine lesson. As humans, we tend to be filled with pride and a sense of self-importance, desiring acknowledgment for our accomplishments. In this chapter, Abram bravely ventures into enemy territory, risking his life, to rescue the captured people of Sodom.

Upon his successful return with every individual and item taken by the enemy, Abram is hailed as a hero and savior in Sodom. He has reunited families, restored stolen belongings, and earned overwhelming gratitude and praise. As the King of Sodom approaches him with cheers of admiration, it would have been easy for Abram to bask in the glory. However, his moment of pride is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Melchizedek, a priest of God Most High. Instead of praising Abram, Melchizedek glorifies God for the salvation of the people and attributes the victory to Him.

Following this poignant reminder, Melchizedek departs, leaving Abram with the King of Sodom, who offers rewards for his heroic deed. Surprisingly, Abram declines the gifts as he is reminded of God’s promise in Genesis 12:2-3 to bless and make a great nation out of him and to be a blessing to all. He recognizes that his victory was granted by God to bless others and not to boast in his own achievement.

Similar to Abram, believers in Christ are called to receive and share God’s blessings, aiming to uplift and improve the lives of those around them by participating in God's redemptive work. The purpose of our blessings is to be blessings ourselves, spreading God’s grace to others as instruments of His love and compassion.

QUESTIONS

1. In chapter 13, Lot selected the land of Sodom over the land designated for Abram by God because it appeared more appealing, and ever since then, it has been characterized by destruction, conflict, and immorality. Have you ever made the error of favoring outward appearance over God's instructions?

2. What does it mean for you to be a source of blessing to those around you today?

3. The rescue of the people of Sodom by Abram provides a glimpse of what God has done for us, symbolizing His salvation. How do you see yourself reflected in this narrative today? Take a moment to express gratitude to God for not abandoning you in your sin but instead pursuing and reclaiming you.
