READ GENESIS 37

GO DEEPER

The main point conveyed in this chapter is that harbored resentment will inevitably escalate. People do not transform into ruthless individuals overnight. Initially, it may seem perplexing how Joseph's brothers could act so heartlessly. How did they become such cruel figures? However, what unfolds in this chapter is how minor instances of envy gradually evolve into intense fury. Each time their father favored Joseph, their bitterness grew a little more. Every success Joseph achieved fueled their increasing anger. Their mounting frustration is evident throughout the chapter. In verse 4, it mentions that when Joseph received the robe, they resented him. Then, a few verses later, after Joseph described his dream to them, it states that "they hated him even more." Every hidden grudge festers and expands over time.

Their years of envy and frustration rendered them capable of extreme actions. These brothers had accumulated years of suppressed resentment, and it all erupted in one moment. Instead of confronting their animosity, their animosity now controlled them. Therefore, when Joseph approached them in solitude that day, they seized the opportunity. This was their opportunity to release the burden of their bitterness. We may believe we are superior to them, asserting we would not spend our lives holding onto numerous grievances.

However, can we be certain? Many family lineages contain similar narratives. A hint of jealousy here and a trace of irritation there can unexpectedly spiral into prolonged alienation. Due to the fact that ongoing animosity always flourishes. Hence, today, rather than clinging to frustration, let us swiftly forgive. Let us address our feelings promptly so they do not take root in our hearts. Whatever we cling to will amplify beyond our imagination. Therefore, let us choose to cling to Jesus today instead of harboring bitterness. He is a far superior companion in life.
