READ LEVITICUS 18
In today's reading of Leviticus 18, many of the rules outlined in this chapter may appear to be common sense to us. The Israelites were surrounded by ungodly nations and had been enslaved by the Egyptians for a long time. The Egyptians viewed sex as a casual activity, akin to eating and sleeping. They incorporated sex into their religious practices due to their worship of fertility gods, leading to common occurrences of incest since sex was seen purely for pleasure and fulfillment.
The Israelites had adopted these distorted views from the Egyptians, prompting God to establish guidelines in this chapter to steer His people back on track and provide them with a new understanding. God aims for His people to grasp the sanctity of sex within the confines of marriage, as emphasized in Genesis 2:24 and Matthew 19:4-6.
Sex is intended as a beautiful and sacred union between one man and one woman in marriage, a concept depicted vividly in the Song of Songs. God wants us to perceive sex as a display of devotion, respect, and holiness, aligning with the consistent sexual ethic articulated throughout the scriptures. Any practices deviating from God's original design for sex are deemed as "wickedness." Sexual intimacy within marriage is regarded as honorable in God's eyes.
In the modern era, Satan has distorted the perception of sex significantly. Our contemporary world, similar to ancient Egypt, tends to trivialize and distort the meaning of sex. Widespread pornography consumption damages lives and marriages, while mainstream media often glorifies casual sexual encounters. Such distortions of the intended purpose of sex disappoint our Heavenly Father. Sex should be cherished as a holy, honoring act shared between spouses. It is crucial for us to resist societal norms and uphold God's values, particularly regarding sexual conduct. Whether single or married, we should strive to honor God by reserving sex for marriage between a man and a woman in a respectful and uplifting manner, rather than participating in degrading practices.
