READ GENESIS 49

GO DEEPER

We have all heard the familiar saying (and tried to believe it!): “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” This is a phrase we repeated as children to brush off hurtful words. However, as we grow older, we come to realize the falsehood of this statement.

Words have the power to create lasting memories; they have a profound impact and are indeed powerful. It is incredible how words spoken to us can linger in our minds for a long time. Whether it was a teacher encouraging our potential, a proud boss, or a disappointed parent, words can either uplift or break us down. The wisdom of Solomon in Proverbs 18:21 rings true—“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

The chapter beautifully illustrates the importance of using our words wisely. Jacob’s final gift to his children was the words he spoke over them, words that they would carry with them for a lifetime. Blessings in the Old Testament held great significance, and Jacob’s sons understood the weight of his words.

What kind of words will people remember you for? Will they recall your sarcasm, gossip, and cynicism? Or will they remember your words of encouragement? This chapter serves as a reminder for us to leave behind a legacy of words that are wise and thoughtful. Jesus even warns against careless speech, stating in Matthew 12:36 that “every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” Our words have an impact on those around us, whether we realize it or not. Let us speak with purpose and mindfulness today.
