READ GENESIS 43
This section continues from where the prior one left off: the brothers come back to Jacob with a request to bring Benjamin with them. Just picture the sorrow Jacob must have felt, watching his family falling apart with nothing he could do to mend it. He reluctantly agrees to let Benjamin go. The brothers then head back to Egypt, uncertain of what lies ahead. They feared being captured as slaves and anticipated retribution for their past actions. Yet, Joseph surprises them.
Rather than enslaving them and seeking revenge, Joseph shows genuine interest in his brothers. He goes as far as hosting a lavish feast for them during a famine. He treated them kindly, even though they didn't deserve it. They accepted Joseph’s generosity, although it was puzzling to them. Unknowingly, they fulfilled the dream Joseph had many years earlier by bowing down before him.
This chapter teaches us many things, but if summarized in one word, it is a story of grace. Similar to how Joseph's brothers deserved punishment for their actions, we all have transgressed against God and fallen short of His standards. However, through Jesus, we are pardoned if we have faith in Him. Instead of condemnation, He invites us to the table and celebrates with us, regardless of our wrongdoings. It's a concept that should astonish us every time we think of it! Joseph grasped God's love as he had experienced it firsthand, allowing him to embody it. If we have also felt this love, we can extend grace and mercy to others, even those we believe do not merit it.
