READ LEVITICUS 27

GO DEEPER

Leviticus 27 functions as an addendum to the book, concluding the instructions given by the LORD to Moses at Mount Sinai for the Israelites. This section primarily addresses contributions to the sanctuary and the treatment of items devoted and presented to the LORD. It can be a complex chapter to understand, and that's alright.

Reviewing verses 28-29: "Notwithstanding no devoted thing, that a man shall devote unto the LORD of all that he hath, both of man and beast, and of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed: every devoted thing is most holy unto the LORD. None devoted, which shall be devoted of men, shall be redeemed; but shall surely be put to death."

One key point to note is that various things can be consecrated to the LORD: a person (usually themselves), an animal, or land. The only individuals permitted to serve in the sanctuary were the Levites, so dedicating these items allowed the entire community to partake in the sanctuary's activities and life. It presented everyone with the opportunity to make their faith personal and invest in it. Faith was no longer a passive experience but one where individuals took active responsibility. This made their faith tangible and real.

How do we interpret verse 29? Recall how at the start of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus mentioned, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." (Matthew 5:17). Consider this: those appointed for "destruction" had to face death. God is fair; justice cannot be disregarded. However, due to His sense of justice, Jesus came to Earth, became fully human while still being fully divine, and willingly took on a just death on our behalf. A member of the "tribe of humanity" had to perish; hence, Jesus chose to do so.

Because of this selfless act, we can now serve the LORD as "a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession" (1 Peter 2:9). Ultimately, Jesus became the One "devoted for destruction" so we could love and serve the LORD. Hallelujah!
