GO DEEPER
As believers, we may be inclined to believe that if we had more explicit guidelines or a step-by-step list of how to show reverence and follow God, being a Christian would become a simpler task. However, the truth is that the narrative of the human heart struggling with conflicting desires—the tendency to prioritize our flawed and independent nature over God's call for us to have sincere hearts and completely trust in Him – is a complex path to navigate. This remains the case even when we feel that God's guidance is straightforward.
In this section, Moses outlines the guidelines for worship that the Israelites must adhere to. These regulations encompass removing old places of worship, forbidding the consumption of animal blood, and providing instructions on presenting burnt offerings on the altar. The purpose of these rules is to safeguard the Israelites and promote their well-being. Moses emphasizes the importance of following these regulations to ensure success and righteousness in the eyes of the Lord.
In the same way as it is today, distractions existed for the followers of God in Moses' day. "Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise." (v 30). Being distracted, listening and following other gods leads to doing "detestable things the Lord hates" (see v 31). Alternative religious beliefs may lure us with deities that seem to directly challenge God. However, there are also other diversions that may not appear religious in nature but can nevertheless draw us away from our devotion to God.
The central theme of Moses' message is to emphasize the unique and ultimate existence of God. Moses introduced laws intended to pave the way for Jesus, thousands of years in the future. The Old Testament anticipates the arrival of Jesus. Interpreting today's verse in connection with Jesus' arrival, sacrifice, and resurrection helps clarify a potentially confusing chapter. With Jesus, we are no longer bound by those same laws. As believers, our essence can be summarized in this verse: "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me." (John 14:6).
