READ EXODUS 23
GO DEEPER
A new day brings a fresh set of guidelines for the Israelites to adhere to. Thus far, we have observed God detailing His requirements for various aspects of life, including property ownership, sexual conduct, and proper borrowing practices from neighbors. The chapter commences with a discourse on justice and concludes with God reaffirming His commitment to the Israelites.
Through this chapter and the preceding ones, we gain valuable insight into the Israelite society as they sought to navigate life post-slavery.
A recurring theme throughout this chapter is evident, starting from verse 2 which cautions against following the crowd in wrongdoing. There are later admonitions about the consequences of worshipping other gods (verses 24 and 32), indicating God's apprehension that the Israelites might succumb to peer pressure and forsake Him.
The company we keep holds significance. This idea resonates throughout the narrative of Scripture. Proverbs 13:20 emphasizes the impact of associating with the wise versus the foolish. It is easy to conform and follow the crowd, but it takes courage and conviction to act in accordance with the Lord's will.
Ultimately, it is essential to recognize the transient nature of our earthly citizenship. When we prioritize material possessions or status, turning them into idols, we essentially conform to societal norms rather than adhering to God's standards. Surrounding ourselves with individuals who encourage spiritual growth, inspire acts of love, and assist in reflecting Christ-like attributes is imperative.
