READ DEUTERONOMY 22

GO DEEPER

Deuteronomy 22 is a fascinating section that transitions from discussing the treatment of animals to the treatment of women. It may make some readers uneasy to see the consequences outlined in the laws for the transgressions mentioned in this chapter. There is much to reflect on in the various verses presented.

The initial four verses focus on the ethical and just treatment of animals, which held significant value in Israelite society. Livestock played a crucial role in sustaining families and communities by providing wealth and sustenance. This passage clearly mandated treating both livestock and birds with compassion. Additionally, the law mandated the care and return of lost animals to their rightful owners. It is reasonable to extend this care and consideration to all animals, as showing kindness and compassion reflects our reverence for creation and is evidently significant to God.

Moses shifts the discussion to the way men behave towards women during courtship and marriage. The consequences were severe, with the law imposing harsh penalties such as heavy fines or even death for crimes like rape, adultery, or incest. It is clear that God placed immense importance on engagement, marriage, and sexual purity, highlighting His desire for mutual respect and honesty within families. Just as God called upon the Israelites to trust Him back then, He continues to call upon us to trust Him now due to His consistent faithfulness. In line with this trust, engagement and marriage should also be founded on the same principles. God has established boundaries for the well-being of His people, as the family unit has always been His creation since the beginning.

As followers of Jesus Christ, it is important for us to establish boundaries in our own lives that will benefit us and bring glory to Him. This holds significance to God for three main reasons. Firstly, as His creation, we are designed to honor God in all aspects of our lives. Ephesians 2:10 emphasizes that we are God's handiwork created in Christ Jesus for good works that He has prepared for us. This message offers hope and guidance to protect us as we seek to fulfill His purpose for us. Secondly, as we pursue a close relationship with God, His holiness becomes a precious gift to us. 1 Peter 1:16 instructs us to strive for holiness, mirroring the holiness of God. Lastly, God understands the destructive impact of sinful behavior and has clearly outlined guidelines against such actions. We have witnessed or experienced the pain and sorrow caused by sexual sin, recognizing that this suffering is not what God desires for His people.

In the year 400 AD, the renowned Catholic bishop St. Augustine candidly discussed his battle with sexual desires and wrongdoing in his work Confessions. He described seeking a path to find the fortitude to find joy in God, ultimately discovering it through embracing Jesus Christ as the mediator between God and humanity. Through a heartfelt embrace of Jesus Christ and adherence to His teachings, we can be purified and empowered to seek purity and righteousness.
