READ DEUTERONOMY 27

GO DEEPER

This chapter emphasizes the importance of taking action, offering clear guidance, and speaking the truth confidently. Many times, we may believe that we are familiar with certain teachings and can therefore disengage. We may be familiar with John 3:16, the gospel, and the Great Commission. We may be exploring more complex theological concepts! Yet, if we fail to regularly practice and deeply understand these foundational principles, then our knowledge may, in fact, be quite limited.

In Deuteronomy 27, God has instructed the people to construct an altar in His honor. They have received teachings and instructions from Moses and are well-informed. It is now crucial for them to not just listen to the Word but also act upon it. Furthermore, God instructs them to inscribe "all the words of this law very clearly" on stones. God's directive is not to "record the law using complex language to appear intelligent" but rather to ensure that everyone understands and follows His commandments. God desires that His law be easily accessible to all so that everyone may know Him and adhere to His teachings.

Sometimes in our lives, pride may hinder us from fulfilling the Great Commission. We may debate topics we think are more important than the gospel instead of spreading it. We might think that the gospel is only meant for children and not for educated adults. However, this belief is incorrect. In Matthew 18:2-4, Jesus emphasizes that those who have the faith of a child will enter the kingdom of heaven. This does not mean that we should not delve into a deeper theological study and understanding of Scripture. However, we should not allow our pursuit of knowledge to become an excuse to neglect the task that God has assigned to us.

The chapter concludes with an evident instruction to openly proclaim the truth. They are not just tasked with constructing an altar, but they are also directed to loudly proclaim to all the people of Israel the laws that are to be inscribed on it. These laws may lead to controversy and possibly result in persecution for those delivering them. Nevertheless, we are advised to remain steadfast and proclaim the truth openly and unequivocally.

God has tasked every one of us with proclaiming the truth as well. This could result in us losing our jobs, being expelled from groups, being ostracized by friends or family, and so on. However, these hardships are insignificant compared to the persecution that the early Church endured or the persecution that our fellow believers in Christ are currently facing in various parts of the world.

Are we prepared to face the potential challenges that may arise from standing up for the truth in God? Are we prepared to accept the simple but powerful message of the gospel and to act while maintaining our humility?
