Moses delivers his final message to the Israelites as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. He has already reviewed their history and laws and now emphasizes the importance of obeying faithfully. Moses highlights the benefits of obeying the Lord, emphasizing His love and faithfulness in keeping promises, and warns of repercussions for disobedience. Moses stresses that God Himself is the ultimate blessing, the source of life and goodness, and outlines the terms, promises, and consequences of the covenant. God assures restoration for Israel in the Promised Land if they repent and return to Him, promising prosperity and protection from enemies upon their repentance.
Moses presents them with a decision: they have the option to select life or death. He states, “See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.” (v. 15-16). Following God's commands results in a fruitful life, while disobedience leads to destruction. The Israelites should not find the laid-out law burdensome, but they will ultimately break it (v. 11). In a preceding chapter, Moses predicted that the Israelites would indeed disobey the Lord and consequently be expelled from the land. They are destined to fall short.
In this chapter, there is a reassurance that the Lord will not abandon them in exile indefinitely. He promises to bring back Israel's prosperity and show them compassion, gathering them from the nations where they were scattered. Following the exile, the Israelites will eventually be reunited and rejuvenated. Similarly, we also face the decision between life and death. We can opt to obey the Lord and His teachings, resulting in life, or we can reject God and face spiritual death. By embracing Jesus, we opt for life abundantly (John 10:10).
The book of Deuteronomy emphasizes the importance of remembering as a recurring theme. Moses instructs the people to recall the ways in which the Lord has guided them, stayed faithful to them, and provided for their needs (Psalm 23:1). They are urged to reflect on His goodness and His promises and to hold fast to His life-giving Word (1 John 5:3). As they enter into the blessings that the Lord has promised, they are reminded of His goodness. This principle applies to us today as well - loving God and obeying Him are interconnected and inseparable elements.
Our actions should align with our beliefs. James 1:22 urges us to not only listen to the teachings of God's word but also to act upon them. Demonstrating our love for God involves adhering to His Word and sincerely following His path. Obeying His Word can be challenging due to our human nature, the deceptions of the enemy, and the brokenness of the world we inhabit, yet it is our purpose. We are designed to remain connected to the Lord and journey with Him forever. Reflecting on the Lord's faithfulness in the past encourages us to trust that He will remain faithful in the future.
