READ DEUTERONOMY 32
GO DEEPER
Prior to his passing, God instructed Moses to compose a song and teach it to all the people of Israel as a testament for them. This section contains that very song. It is a common observation that lyrics set to music are more easily retained in memory compared to words alone. Songs and rhymes serve as memory aids that assist in recalling essential information. Have you ever utilized a melody to memorize the alphabet, the months of the year, the quadratic equation, the periodic table, or the books of the Bible? Our minds are wired by God in such a way that musical cues aid in retention. In His boundless wisdom, He entrusts Moses with a song for the people so that it remains ingrained in their minds and they can recollect it regularly. The method employed in this instance is just as deliberate as the message itself.
One could break this song into four distinct sections:
- The nature of God (verses 1-4)
- The goodness of God (verses 5-14)
- The reliability of God in disciplining His followers (verses 15-25)
- The retribution of God towards His enemies (verses 26-43)
The goal is to assist the followers of God in recalling His reliability. Reflecting on God's faithfulness will guide us in following His path and passing on these teachings to our children. Understanding and believing in God's character and benevolence will increase our trust that good things await us as we follow His guidance.
"And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law. For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life: and through this thing ye shall prolong your days in the land, whither ye go over Jordan to possess it." (Deuteronomy 32:46-47). Notice that verse 47 states it is not an empty word for you, but rather your very life. It is your very life! Life is found in obedience to God—true, deep, abundant life!
Paul comes to a similar conclusion in Romans 8:6. He says, "For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." Today, we have the opportunity to select life and peace by following the guidance of the Spirit and adhering to the teachings of God's Word.
