READ JOSHUA 15

GO DEEPER

Upon initial inspection, this chapter may seem intimidating. The chapter includes a list of names that you might find difficult to pronounce, as well as cities that may not seem geographically significant to you while reading this passage from your couch (or wherever you are). However, there is a wealth of valuable information to be learned from this text.

This chapter discusses the actual apportionment of the land of Canaan. Judah was initially favored due to Jacob's blessing. The text outlines the boundaries of Judah's territory, describes Caleb's capture of Hebron and Debir, and provides a detailed list of the cities allocated to Judah. It is crucial to remember the events leading up to this passage. Despite being 85 years old, Caleb remained determined and faced the challenges presented by enemy territories. Joshua and Caleb did not rest on their laurels but continued to strive for progress. Let us aspire to demonstrate a similar perseverance. Caleb serves as a role model, driving out giants and bringing blessings and streams to the desert.

However, some individuals did not possess the same determination. As per the writer, the Jebusites were "unable" to be expelled from the territory of Jerusalem. The situation raises the question, "What prevented them from forcing out the Jebusites? Didn't God promise them the land and His presence with them?" Instead of an inability, it appears to be more of an unwillingness. The conquest of Jerusalem required a significant amount of time for the people of God. It wasn't until King David ascended to power in 2 Samuel 5 that they were able to achieve this.

After reading Joshua 15, we must decide whether to retire or transform our culture. We have the option to either observe passively or adopt Caleb's unwavering determination. Instead of shying away, we can embrace the opportunities before us and combat darkness in the name of the Kingdom. Let us be individuals who tackle obstacles head-on and confront challenges in alignment with God's plan!

QUESTIONS

1. Reflect on Genesis 49:9-10 and consider how it relates to the land given to Judah. How could this prophecy possibly be connected to Jesus?

2. Think about the promises from God that give you confidence, like Caleb's.

3. In Numbers 13, the chapter concludes with the people expressing doubt about taking Jerusalem. Considering this, what negative thoughts or doubts are hindering you from embracing God's plans for your future?
