READ JOSHUA 18
GO DEEPER
Joshua took charge in this chapter by assembling and dispatching the Israelites to scout the territory where they would establish their new home. Despite appearing unconventional, Joshua aimed for the people to have a thorough understanding of the land given to them by God. This task was not arbitrary; it was essential for identifying the inhabitants and allocating each tribe their designated land. Towards the end of the chapter, Joshua allocates specific plots of land to each tribe, providing detailed descriptions of each area.
The entire passage of Scripture seems to be a fulfillment of God's command to Adam in Genesis 1. When Adam was created, God instructed him to ". . . Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it . . ." (Genesis 1:28). Adam was tasked with the duty of caring for and managing the earth. Similarly, we witness Joshua carrying out this command by placing the Israelites in a position where they can populate the earth and bring it under control.
People sometimes criticize Christians for their escape-focused mindset. Some people hold the belief that all Christians are only concerned with achieving heaven, seeing faith in Jesus as a means to avoid hell. However, our belief in Jesus offers more than just an escape route. It emphasizes the significance of our current life. The Bible clearly states that God has placed us in certain locations and times for specific reasons. If we live our lives solely aiming for heaven, we overlook our purposes and God's designs for us. Instead, we must understand the environment we are in and be mindful of it. We should identify the needs of our community and take action. While residing in our current surroundings, God has a plan for us. We are meant to be grounded in our current situation and allow the Holy Spirit to work through us in influencing those around us.
