READ JOSHUA 20

GO DEEPER

In this excerpt, Joshua is shown implementing God's directive to Moses in Numbers 35 and Deuteronomy 19 to establish "six cities of refuge for my people." There is significant mention in the Old Testament of these cities of refuge, prompting curiosity over the meticulous arrangement for cases where one person unintentionally causes harm to another.

God has a plan in place for us to grasp and appreciate His nature. God put in place a system to provide His people with safety in times of danger by creating cities of refuge. Described by one author as a sanctuary for those who may have committed a crime unknowingly, these cities provided a sense of security for individuals in need. As they sought safety within these cities, one can imagine the fear and relief they experienced, understanding that reaching the refuge meant salvation. Their gratitude for this plan, which shielded them from harm and permitted their return home to a life of freedom after the high priest's passing, would have been immeasurable.

Does this sound like a familiar story? When Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit, it prompted God to come up with a solution to save humanity from the risk of being separated from Him for eternity. The Old Testament interweaves this salvation plan, consistently guiding us towards our ultimate source of safety: Jesus Christ. Even though our sins may be different from those mentioned in the Old Testament, like the residents of the city of Kedesh, we can find refuge in Jesus, our High Priest, as Hebrews 6:18 tells us. By believing in His death and resurrection, we are empowered with the strength and encouragement to persevere and cling to the hope of spending eternity in His presence.
The book of Psalms alone references God over 15 times as our "safe haven" during challenging times. So, whatever burden you are facing today—be it guilt, anxiety, despair, stress, worry, financial troubles, or shame—seek refuge in Him just as people sought sanctuary in Kedesh. He has already prepared for what dangers you are seeking to escape. Be encouraged and find peace and protection in the knowledge that no matter what you are running from, God is your sanctuary and strength, always available to assist in any trouble. He has prepared in advance and is ready to embrace you.
