READ JUDGES 6

GO DEEPER

In the account of Gideon in Judges 6, we find comfort in the understanding of how graciously God addresses our individual moments of uncertainty. Let's review three instances of doubt and how God reacts to them.

As the chapter progresses, we discover that the Midianites are ruling over the Israelites, and God chooses Gideon to rescue His people. An angel of the Lord appears to Gideon to assign him the mission, but Gideon expresses doubts about himself; his family is not influential, and he is not the strongest among his siblings. However, how does God react? God doesn't dispute Gideon's concerns but assures him that He will be by his side. The presence of God is our source of strength.

The second illustration of uncertainty is seen in Israel. Why does God allow the Midianites to oppress His chosen people? The Israelites have allowed their doubts to hinder their trust in God's provision and control. They have forsaken Him and placed their faith in false deities. On the contrary, Gideon displays reverence for God by obeying his commands, destroying the altar of Baal and the Asherah pole, and erecting an altar in honor of the Lord. Upon introspection, we may discover that we too hold loyalty to other idols, such as money, comfort, or societal status. It is imperative that we emulate Gideon by dismantling these altars and filling our hearts with devotion to the one true God through worship.

In the previous example, Gideon expresses doubt towards God before the battle, despite having received promises from God that He will be by his side and will save Israel. Gideon still requests a sign from God. The hesitant fighter specifies certain conditions, which God graciously fulfills, giving Gideon the go-ahead. It may seem amusing how uncertain Gideon is portrayed in this story, but don't we find ourselves in similar situations? How often do we resemble Gideon, questioning when we know God is urging us to share the Gospel with someone but we lack the confidence to do so? During these times, we can voice our uncertainties to the Lord and find comfort in the knowledge that His presence is with us; He is Immanuel.

2. What do you seek for security in place of God? In simpler terms, what false gods reside in your heart?
