READ RUTH 4
GO DEEPER
To truly understand the significance of Ruth 4, it is helpful to reflect on Ruth 1. This chapter paints a picture of deep sorrow and loss in Naomi's life. From having to leave her homeland due to famine to the death of her husband and sons, Naomi faced numerous tragedies. Feeling abandoned by the Lord, Naomi even discouraged her daughters-in-law from accompanying her, as she believed she had no future to offer them. Despite this bleak outlook, Ruth displayed unwavering loyalty and love towards Naomi and her God, choosing to stay by her side.
Now, consider how the story concludes in chapter 4: Boaz ensures that God takes care of Naomi and Ruth. Ruth doesn't end up facing widowhood and poverty as anticipated by Naomi. When Ruth gives birth to a child, it's like Naomi is given a grandson (4:17). Furthermore, this child goes on to become the grandfather of David, who is an ancestor of Jesus, the world's Savior (4:22).
This is more than just a story of a sorrowful narrative ending happily in the end. In a mysterious and beautiful manner, God orchestrates something extraordinary through the obedient actions of ordinary individuals who are confronting hardship and doubt. God is subtly at work throughout the entire narrative, although the characters may not immediately perceive it. Initially, Naomi couldn't envision the possibility of redemption with Boaz, as she was unable to see beyond the walls of bitterness surrounding her. She failed to recognize that God had paved a path for her to return home when the famine in her native land subsided. Despite having loyal Ruth by her side, Naomi lamented her return as "empty" to others (1:21)
She may not have realized it, but God was already providing! Even after Ruth gave birth to her son, Obed, no one knew that Obed would eventually become the ancestor of David and Jesus himself! Even if we don't see the results of our obedience immediately, we can trust that God is actively working in our lives at this moment and that He will bring about remarkable outcomes beyond what we can envision (refer to Romans 8:28, Genesis 50:20, 2 Corinthians 4:17). Our focus should be on being faithful and courageous in obedience; God will take care of the consequences of our obedience, and He will turn even our most challenging experiences into something beautiful for His divine purposes.

2. Can we trust that God is fulfilling His purposes through our actions today, even if we may not fully understand them at this moment?
3. Are there any material possessions or attachments that prevent us from wholeheartedly loving and dedicating ourselves to others?
