READ 1 SAMUEL 5

GO DEEPER

The ultimate journey in life is to dedicate ourselves to serving God in all aspects of our lives. This is not a simple task, as throughout history, including in the present day, idols have caused chaos and disaster. These idols replace God and divert our worship towards them. Worshiping idols results in lies, ruin, and mortality. The troubling aspect of idolatry is that it can go unnoticed. The story in 1 Samuel 5 highlights how idolatry can bring about fatal consequences.

Certainly, certain idols make a lot of "noise". For instance, the desire for sex, wealth, or recognition can be quite conspicuous. When we pursue these things, it becomes evident to those who are familiar with us or track us online. Noisy idols are comparable to Dagon, clearly displayed on the "altars" of our existence. Other idols are subtle or gradual, yet equally perilous. They resemble an iceberg with a wide surface but a deep underwater presence, a boa constricting its prey bit by bit, or a solitary cancer cell. Wickedness doesn't always scream from the rooftops; at times, it quietly resides and flourishes in our basement.

What are the sneaky idols? In the workplace, they could include things like a coveted promotion, a particular colleague, or a favored workflow that starts to gain our attention. At home, they may take the form of our vehicle, kitchen appliances, or personal computer. We can encounter these subtle temptations on television or even among our closest loved ones. They stealthily occupy our thoughts, gradually moving up from being a minor concern to becoming our top priority. However, it is evident from the Ten Commandments that God does not tolerate idolatry. Today's scripture highlights that idols are incompatible with God's presence.

God leads us away from idols and towards Himself through His Word, the Bible. He also directs us through the incarnate Word, Jesus. The Holy Spirit leads us into all truth. God resides with us as our Counselor, convicting and enlightening us. Fellow Christians must encourage and help other to turn away from idols and focus on Jesus.

Choosing to follow God enables us to steer clear of idols. A life unburdened by idols is filled with love and happiness, leading us on a thrilling journey. Idols will bring ruin if they find a way into our hearts and homes, whether through loud proclamations or stealthy entrances. Choosing to pursue idols will not lead to an exciting journey but rather a path of devastation. We should be wary of the presence of idols, like Dagon, and move away from them towards God.
