READ 1 SAMUEL 7
GO DEEPER
In 1 Samuel 7, we witness a transformation from anxiety to calmness. The Israelites had forsaken God, disregarded His laws, worshipped different deities, and ignored His directive to house the ark of the covenant in the temple (instead placing it in Abinadab's residence). This departure from God resulted in chaos, with the looming Philistine threat, the Israelites gripped by fear, and a lack of guidance.
Samuel then urged the Israelites to focus their hearts on the Lord and worship Him exclusively, promising that He would rescue them from the Philistines. This required them to forsake their idols of material worth, as Baals were believed to control the weather, prosperity, and agricultural yields, while Ashtoreth was associated with fertility. The allure of these false deities was diverting the people from their true God. By abandoning their enslavement to these idols, they symbolically emptied themselves of worldly desires and acknowledged their need for the Lord. Through prayer, confession, and fasting, they demonstrated their commitment to serving only the Lord, declaring His superiority over all other entities.
Even though they had reconciled with God, they remained fearful of their adversaries. The Philistines posed a significant danger, yet fortunately, we serve an even greater God. The passionate supplications of the Israelites for safeguarding were granted. ". . . but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited [confused] them; and they were smitten [defeated] before Israel." (1 Samuel 7:10). As Israel prayed for deliverance, God intervened in the battle on their behalf. Similarly, He continues to work on behalf of His people, even if His actions are not always apparent through audible signals. God graciously engages in battling our challenges alongside us and for us as long as we seek His help. Samuel emphasized this reality by setting up an Ebenezer stone, symbolizing God's assistance. This stone served as a poignant reminder of God's faithfulness in delivering His repentant and humble followers.
After the Lord successfully defeated the enemy in battle and His followers trusted in Him, the cities were rebuilt and peace prevailed. One might expect that the people would find satisfaction in God alone at this point, but as we continue reading in the following days, the narrative takes a different turn.
