READ 1 SAMUEL 17
GO DEEPER
David and Goliath is a famous story from the Bible that is widely recognized. People, regardless of their beliefs, are familiar with the story of how a small man triumphs over a giant using only a slingshot. David is portrayed as the ultimate underdog who emerges victorious against Goliath, and everyone enjoys a story where the underdog succeeds. However, we should not overlook the significant role that God plays in this story just because it is well-known. It is not David who defeats Goliath, but rather God. Considering this story solely as an underdog tale can lead us to mistakenly view David as the hero, when in reality, he is not.
Revisit this declaration of defiance from the Book of 1 Samuel 17:45-47: "Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands."
David's confidence in overcoming an opponent much larger than him stemmed from his belief that the victory was ultimately in God's hands. He saw himself as a mere instrument through which God could act. This lesson remains relevant today, emphasizing the idea that the battles we face are ultimately God's to fight. We are not expected to face challenges alone; instead, God stands ready to accompany us. By relinquishing control and allowing Him to intervene on our behalf, we can witness His power at work in our lives.
We face our giants by kneeling down in prayer. Phil Wickham expresses this sentiment through his song, “When I fight, I’ll fight on my knees with my hands lifted high. Oh God, the battle belongs to You.” No matter what challenges we are currently confronted with, we should not rely solely on our own abilities to overcome them as we will never be sufficient. Even the most skilled soldiers in the Israelite army were unable to defeat Goliath. Our physical strength, mental resilience, skills, talents, and gifts are not enough to save us. Only God has the power to save us. We can humbly surrender our own strength, present our battles to God, and allow Him to fight on our behalf, as this is where His strength truly shines.
QUESTIONS
1. How does it appear when you rely on your own abilities to overcome challenges? Are you currently relying solely on yourself?
2. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, Paul mentions that he takes pride in his weaknesses so that he can experience the power of Christ in his life. Why do our shortcomings demonstrate the strength of Christ? How have you witnessed God’s strength shining through your weaknesses?
3. Are you encountering any struggles or conflicts currently? Have you presented them to the Lord in prayer? If not, pause immediately and confront these challenges through prayer.
