2 Samuel 11

READ 2 SAMUEL 11

GO DEEPER

Today's lesson is summarized by (1) being where God wants you to be, and (2) confess when you are elsewhere. David fails to do both, and this chapter illustrates the negative outcomes of such wrongdoing.

Initially, David is not in the place where God intends him to be. Instead of leading his men to battle as kings typically do, David is found on his rooftop gazing at another man's wife. Giving in to his desires, he then sends for Bathsheba through a messenger. It's important to note that the gesture was not a cordial invitation. According to the Hebrew language, the most accurate interpretation is that David's messengers "seized her." David's decision to neglect his duties led to lust and an abuse of his authority. It's like a situation where temptation strikes when we are not fulfilling our obligations. Consequently, David ends up committing adultery with the wife of one of his soldiers.

Secondly, rather than admitting his wrongdoing right away, David chooses to further engage in it. He believes that summoning Uriah back from battle will solve everything, but sin cannot simply be covered up. No one can evade the consequences of sin. Instead of acknowledging his sin and seeking forgiveness, David denies it. When Bathsheba becomes pregnant, exposing his sin, David resorts to deception and attempts to handle the situation without confessing to God. This deceit only leads to more sin and ultimately death.

In essence, we should be in the locations that align with God's plan for us. Christians are meant to fulfill their responsibilities in various areas like home, work, school, church, and community. Within these designated spaces, we are called to nurture and show love to our family, colleagues, neighbors, and friends. If we stray from these places and purposes assigned by God, we are more susceptible to sin. Unlike David, if we recognize we have strayed, we should promptly confess and realign ourselves with the path the Lord has set for us.

QUESTIONS

1. David's initial error was failing to be in the right place at the right time. Are you currently present in locations that are not part of God's plan for you? Are you ignoring His orders to be somewhere else?

2. What wrongdoing are you trying to hide? How can you expose and address that wrongdoing promptly?

3. Additionally, what insights do you gain about the nature of God from this passage?
