READ 2 SAMUEL 4

GO DEEPER

The content in 2 Samuel 4 is shocking and horrifying. However, it highlights David's understanding that human actions aimed at gaining approval or assisting God using our abilities ultimately do not benefit anyone. In other words, human endeavor is ineffective in either thwarting or fulfilling God's intentions and designs.

Rechab and Baanah believed that David would be pleased to receive Ish-bosheth's severed head as a gift. They aimed to win the king's favor by killing his rivals, acting on their own, and justifying their deeds. Nevertheless, they miscalculated David's unwavering devotion to God and Saul's lineage (1 Samuel 24:20-22).

We tend to separate ourselves from heinous criminals such as ruthless killers, believing that we cannot understand or connect with their atrocious behavior. However, we are also susceptible to the same temptations that influenced Rechab and Baanah—seeking validation from others and becoming impatient with God's timing. There is a tendency to try to hasten God's work, particularly if there may be personal gain involved. The desire for approval from others frequently influences our choices instead of courageously advancing in righteousness and loyalty.

David had a reverence for God and understood that the basis of God's throne is righteousness and justice (Psalm 89:14). He had faith in God's design to appoint him as king and did not let wicked or cowardly actions disrupt God's assurances.

Every day, we have the choice to seek validation from either people or from God. We can decide to have faith in His timing and His plan, or we can become impatient and resort to taking quick shortcuts to "assist" God. Let's strive to be individuals who make thoughtful decisions.

QUESTIONS

1. How can you perceive God's nature through David's behavior in this passage? (Refer to Ezekiel 33:11 for more understanding.)

2.  In what manner do you attempt to assist God in His plan? How do you strive for validation from others?

3. What deeds are you justifying, aiming to seek approval or control situations?
