GO DEEPER
David, an ordinary man without any specialized education or military training, possessed a deep understanding of God's heart. He was guided by God in his day-to-day responsibilities, having built a close relationship with Him through personal experiences of witnessing His power, provision, and protection. In 1 Samuel 26, we see David's unwavering confidence rooted in his complete trust in the Lord. Despite the news of Saul's pursuit, David does not succumb to fear; instead, he takes action to verify the rumors. Faced with a real threat from a deranged king and 3,000 soldiers, David remains composed due to his priority of fearing God above all else. This fear of God outweighed any fear he had of men, enabling him to navigate dangerous situations with calm assurance.
When we feel like circumstances are beyond our control, our instinctive reaction might be to work harder, worry excessively, and try to maintain control. David, unable to defend his flock without divine assistance, realized that he could not ensure his own safety in times of grave peril. Just a few chapters earlier, he detailed some of his struggles, highlighting how God's power, provision, and protection came into play when he was saved from both a lion and a bear (1 Samuel 17). While most of us may not face physical threats like David did, we often attempt to take matters into our own hands when dealing with others. Rather than relying on his own abilities, David entrusted himself to the Lord's power, protection, and provision, displaying unwavering faith in God. Though aspiring to become Israel's next king, David was determined not to obtain the throne through sinful means such as murder or rebellion. He exemplified patient and confident trust by waiting for God's timing to assume the throne. Through this process, he discovered that God would safeguard him as he assumed his rightful role as ruler over Israel.
When David finds himself in a position of authority over Saul, he turns to the ultimate source of power. Rather than reacting with his legitimate feelings of frustration and anger, David shows mercy towards Saul. David expresses his belief in divine justice by saying, "The LORD render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness" (1 Samuel 26:23). Further exploration of David's life reveals that the Lord does indeed favor him and enable him to thrive. Additionally, there are instances in David's life where we witness the Lord showing him great mercy by refraining from the punishment he merits and restoring him.
