 READ RUTH 4

GO DEEPER

In order to gain a deeper understanding of Ruth 4, let’s reflect on Ruth 1. The initial chapters of Ruth are filled with sorrow: Naomi's family relocated due to a famine crisis. Subsequently, her husband passed away, and later her sons also died childless, leading Naomi to feel abandoned by the Lord (1:13). Despite Naomi advising her daughters-in-law not to accompany her since she would not be able to secure husbands for them, Ruth remained steadfast in her loyalty and love towards Naomi and her God.

Fast forward to the conclusion of the narrative in chapter 4: God provides for Naomi and Ruth through Boaz. Unlike the widowhood and destitution Naomi foresaw for Ruth, she becomes a mother when Ruth gives birth to a son, symbolizing a new start for Naomi through her grandson (4:17). Furthermore, this son, Obed, eventually becomes the forefather of David and ultimately Jesus, the Savior of the world (4:22).

This story is not merely about a sorrowful situation resolving itself positively in the end. God orchestrates something extraordinary through the obedient actions of ordinary individuals facing hardship and uncertainty. While God is quietly at work throughout the story, the individuals are initially unable to perceive it. Naomi, engulfed in bitterness in chapter 1, fails to recognize the possibility of redemption with Boaz. She believed she was returning home "empty," disregarding the loyal support of Ruth by her side (1:21). Despite Naomi's unawareness, God was already providing.

Even after the birth of Ruth's baby Obed, the characters remained unaware that he would be the ancestor of David and Jesus. Although we may not witness the fruits of our obedience immediately, we can trust that God is actively working in our lives presently and will bring about blessings beyond our expectations in due time. The focus should be on upholding faithful and courageous obedience, as God oversees the outcomes and transforms even our most challenging circumstances for a higher purpose.

QUESTIONS

1. Do our current tribulations at times obstruct our ability to recognize the ways in which God is providing for us?

2. Do you have faith that God is manifesting His intentions through your obedience and plans that potentially surpass your current comprehension?

3. Are there any worldly attachments holding us back from fully expressing radical love and commitment towards others?
