 READ RUTH 3

GO DEEPER

Naomi, the mother-in-law of Ruth, expresses to Ruth her desire to find a suitable husband for her. Naomi believed that Ruth would be well cared for if she were married, and she encourages Ruth to pursue marriage. Ruth and Boaz did not follow the modern concept of "dating" but spent time together in group settings to understand each other's character. This contrasts with the superficial nature of modern dating, where individuals often put on a false persona to attract others. Despite the different approach depicted in the biblical story of Ruth 3, there are valuable lessons to be gained from it.

Upon observing Boaz's behavior in a group setting, Naomi advises Ruth to approach him one-on-one. Following a custom from Ancient Israel called goel, Naomi instructs Ruth to lay down near Boaz's feet after he finishes eating. While some may find Naomi's advice forward, her intention is to ensure that Boaz fulfills his duties as a "kinsman redeemer" to protect Ruth and her family's interests. Boaz responds with humility and patience, waiting for Ruth to signal her willingness for him to act as her goel. He treats Ruth with kindness and generosity, giving her six measures of barley before she leaves in the morning.

In summary, Boaz demonstrates love towards Ruth through his humility, patience, and consideration. He acknowledges Ruth as a woman of noble character and prioritizes her well-being. Boaz's actions serve as an exemplary display of love for us to reflect upon.
