 READ GENESIS 3

GO DEEPER

Reflect on the most enchanting place you have ever visited—a natural spot that retains its original beauty. At the outset of this chapter, everything is idyllic: birds are singing in the sky, Adam and Eve are happily united, and there is a stunning garden for Adam to care for. Perfect harmony prevails. However, as the chapter progresses, a significant shift occurs. Imperfections emerge, and humanity is confronted with the consequences of sin that continue to affect us today.

So, how did we reach this point? The text explains that Satan, in the form of a serpent, enticed Eve by offering her the chance to become like God. This seductive tactic has been repeatedly employed by Satan since then. It manifests in various ways, but at its core lies our pride. Intoxicated by our egos, we erroneously believe that we know better than God, leading us to act according to our desires. Instead of elevating us to God's level, this attitude only widens the gap between us.

Despite the solemnity of this chapter, there are two sources of hope. Firstly, observe God's response to Adam and Eve towards the chapter's end. While there are consequences for their sin, God still shows care for them by providing animal skins for them to cover themselves (marking the first instance of animal blood being shed to atone for their sin).

Secondly, this marks the earliest mention of a coming Savior. God tells Satan that someone will be born that will crush him, though suffering a wound in the process. Although it will take time, this foreshadows Jesus's eventual arrival to restore what has been shattered. Amidst the brokenness surrounding us, we must always remember that Jesus came to mend it all back together again.
