 READ GENESIS 4

GO DEEPER

Many of us may be familiar with the tragic story of Cain and Abel. Two brothers from the same family, raised in the same manner, and given the same opportunities. However, they possessed contrasting personalities and pursued different professions. Both brothers worshipped God by presenting offerings to the Lord.

Abel's offering was sacrificial and sincere, as he gave his very best to honor God. On the other hand, Cain presented an offering that may have seemed acceptable on the surface, but it lacked the depth of sincerity that Abel demonstrated. The Bible does not explicitly explain how the brothers discerned which offering was pleasing to God and which was not, but Cain's response of anger and jealousy indicates his awareness of God's preference. Hebrews 11:4 clarifies that Abel's offering was superior because of his faith. Cain's jealousy and resentment towards his brother eventually led him to commit the unthinkable act of murder. This tragic event marked the beginning of conflict and sin among humanity, following the fall of Adam and Eve recounted in Genesis 3.

Despite Cain's heinous deed, God's grace and mercy were exemplified through His decision to spare his life. The narrative emphasizes that God's character remains constant, His promises are steadfast, and His commands are meant for our benefit and His glory. Just as Cain was offered a chance at life despite his transgression, we too can receive God's grace through Jesus, undeserving as we may be.

God expects us to offer Him our best in every aspect of our lives—our time, talents, resources, and more. The question posed is how we will respond. Will we emulate Abel by offering everything to God wholeheartedly, or will we follow in Cain's footsteps by holding back our best?

In Romans 12:1, the apostle Paul urges believers to present themselves as living sacrifices, pleasing and holy to God, reflecting true worship. Our authentic worship lies in surrendering all that we are and all that we have to God, just as Abel did. May we be individuals who demonstrate our devotion to God by giving Him our all.

QUESTIONS

1. Abel presented a sacrifice that was very valuable, demonstrating his deep love for God by giving a costly gift. When was the most recent occasion where your offering to God required a sacrifice (be it money, time, or talent)?

2. In Genesis 4:7, God compassionately addresses Cain. What insights do you gain about God's character in this interaction?

3. Why do you believe Abel’s sacrifice was approved while Cain’s was turned down?
