READ GENESIS 5
GO DEEPER
In the previous chapter, the story was told of how Cain brutally killed his own brother Abel. It is difficult to fathom a greater tragedy for a parent than one child murdering another. Despite the sorrow of losing Abel, God blessed them with another son, Seth, and Eve expressed thankfulness that God had granted her another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him. (see Genesis 4:25). The subsequent lineage presented in chapter 5 reveals that it is through Seth that Noah is eventually born, and later, through Noah, Abraham is born (Genesis 10-11), leading to the lineage of Joseph, the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus (Matthew 1). Even amidst the dark shadow of familial violence and grief, we witness God continuing to work out His plan of redemption. Cain's heinous act of murder did not derail God's ultimate purpose to save humanity through Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection.
God's plans are always fulfilled without obstruction, regardless of violence, evil, dysfunction, or death. While we may go through hardships on earth, God ensures that His plan reaches its completion. He orchestrates every individual's life span, their family background, the children they bear or lose, and the interconnected genealogies throughout history. Our identities, our family heritage, our future families, and God's eternal work within each of us are all intricately woven together by His design. This is not mere happenstance. As Psalm 115:3 proclaims, But our God is in the heavens: He hath done whatsoever He hath pleased. and Psalm 138:8 reassures, The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: . . .
What implication does this hold for our daily lives? It calls for trust. When confronted with family disputes, infertility, miscarriage, bereavement, or other distressing circumstances, we trust that even in the midst of these trials, God will continue to work out His plan across generations – His benevolent plan for us, our offspring, and the world. He governs not just genealogies but every minute detail.
We rely on this trust as we proclaim the gospel and serve others. We understand that nothing can obstruct God's mission of reconciliation, enabling us to take bold steps in sharing the gospel. We find reassurance that our own limitations will not impede God's work in others' lives. With courage and peace, we press on no matter the current circumstances.
