READ GENESIS 46

GO DEEPER

Today, we learned about Jacob's trip to Egypt. It's important to note that Jacob was not a young man at this point; he was a robust 130 years old. Relocating over 500 miles away was probably not high on his list of desired activities. The journey to Egypt was a daunting one; he understood that once he set out, there would be no return (alive). Moreover, he was leaving the land that God had pledged to his family to venture into enemy territory, Egypt.

Why did he go? The answer is straightforward: God commanded him to do so. God assured him that He would accompany Jacob, transform him into a mighty nation there, provide him the opportunity to reunite with his cherished son, Joseph, and, above all, bring him back eventually. God was gracious in assuring Jacob of His presence and plan at the start of such a difficult journey. Often, we desire the same reassurance from God – to hear His voice, understand His plan, and sense His encompassing presence in a clear manner. Though God might not communicate with us as explicitly as in Jacob's case, He still communicates with us and offers similar assurances through His teachings.

God promises to lead and accompany us (Deuteronomy 31:8), guide and enlighten us on the right path (Psalm 32:8), grant us hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11), give us an incomprehensible peace (Philippians 4:7), work all things for our benefit (Romans 8:28), pardon our transgressions (1 John 1:9), and, crucially, provide us eternal life in Him (John 3:36).

Jacob adhered to God's command and faithfully followed Him to Egypt because he trusted in God's word and believed in His pledges. Do you share the same trust in God's word? Do you have faith in His assurances to you? Like Jacob, are you obediently following because you have confidence that God's promises to you will be fulfilled?

QUESTIONS

1. Is there a specific promise of God that you find challenging to trust in?

2. If so, what makes it hard for you to believe it? In what ways can you enhance your obedience and devotion to God by having faith in the promises He has made to you?

3. Jacob had abandoned hope of ever seeing Joseph again, but God remained true to His promise, leading to their joyous reunion after 17 years. Have you let go of a dream? How does this account inspire and strengthen your faith?
