READ LEVITICUS 7

GO DEEPER

In Leviticus, we have learned about the prescribed ritual offerings for worship under the Old Covenant, as instructed by the Lord at Mount Sinai. In this covenant, people were classified as either pure or impure, with impurity linked to death and various factors such as skin diseases, contact with mold, touching a corpse, and consuming impure animals. Sacrifices were a means for impure individuals to approach their holy God. A couple of these offerings were expressions of gratitude towards God, while three were acts of repentance. Leviticus 7 discusses the Guilt Offering and the Fellowship Offering.

The purpose of the Guilt Offering was similar to the Sin Offering, but was necessary when someone unintentionally transgressed against the Lord's "holy things" or another person, highlighting the obligation for recompense when wrong has been done. Hebrews 9:22 emphasizes that the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

This underscores God's seriousness concerning offenses toward Him and others, even if accidental. The Fellowship Offering, on the other hand, was a voluntary offering to God, made in three specific scenarios: as a voluntary expression of praise for God's goodness, in conjunction with a fulfilled vow, or as a token of gratitude for God's deliverance in times of trouble.

This passage reveals that sin carries repercussions, yet God always provided a means for atonement. We are all guilty of transgressing against a holy God, with death as the consequence (Romans 6:23). These sacrifices served as a demonstration of God's justice and a channel of grace for His people, ultimately pointing towards the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Hebrews 10:1 states that "For the law having a shadow of good things to come." Christ is the fulfillment of these sacrifices, having once and for all bore the burden of our sins (1 Peter 3:18), offering the opportunity for us to be in communion with God. Today, let us give praise for this incredible gift of grace.
