READ LEVITICUS 8
In the text, the reading commences with "The Lord spoke to Moses," detailing the special consecration of the priests chosen to stand before the Lord on behalf of His people. The specific guidelines and intricate rituals for setting apart Aaron and his sons for their esteemed and crucial role demonstrate how God is providing a way for His sinful and impure people to encounter His presence. Leviticus serves as a guide for the sinful Israelites, God's chosen people, to enter His sacred presence and worship Him.
Through Moses' obedient actions, the priests are sanctified for their service to the Holy God. Each step symbolizes God's cleansing process, from washing and dressing to anointing with oil and offering animal sacrifices. The blood of these animals is then applied to the priest's earlobe, hand, and foot, and sprinkled on the altar. Additionally, blood is sprinkled on the priests' garments. While these animal sacrifices could not permanently erase sin, they vividly portrayed the seriousness of sin and the costliness of its consequences. Without addressing sin, the people could not approach God. Thus, the priesthood and sacrificial system were established by God for the benefit of His people.
Examining this ancient practice through a modern-day perspective may be challenging. Our understanding of God may not always acknowledge His holiness, and our perception of sin might underestimate its grave nature. The abundance of blood mentioned in the text may evoke discomfort in us. Nevertheless, as we delve into Leviticus, we gain a clearer realization of the holiness of God and our own unholiness, prompting humility. Recognizing God's holiness reveals our dire need for the life and sacrifice of Jesus. Our sins create a gulf between us and the perfectly pure, just, righteous, and powerful God.
The Gospel message proclaims that Jesus humbled Himself by coming to earth, even in the form of a vulnerable baby, lived among us as a human, and ultimately offered His spotless life by shedding His blood unto death, to enable us to have communion with God. Now, we can confidently approach the throne of our Holy God because Jesus, the ultimate High Priest, has risen and intercedes on our behalf. What can cleanse us from our sins? Put simply, only the blood of Jesus can accomplish this.
