READ GENESIS 39
A lot of significant events have transpired in Joseph's life since we last encountered him in Genesis 37. He was purchased by Potiphar, an official in Pharaoh's court, and his endeavors prospered due to God's blessing upon him. Things appeared promising for Joseph until he crossed paths with Potiphar's wife. Joseph, being an attractive man, became the target of her advances. When he rejected her, she falsely accused him of attempting to assault her, leading to Joseph being unjustly imprisoned.
There are valuable lessons to be gleaned from Joseph's ordeal in this narrative, with two points particularly standing out. Firstly, we witness Joseph's integrity in the face of temptation. Joseph could have succumbed to desire and kept his actions hidden, but instead, he remained steadfast in his commitment to honor God and resist sin (v. 9). Despite being ensnared in a dilemma where he was expected to obey Potiphar's wife while also remaining loyal to Potiphar, Joseph chose to act in accordance with God's will.
Additionally, the unwavering presence of the Lord in Joseph's life is evident throughout these trials. From the time his brothers sold him into slavery to his imprisonment, God's protective hand never left Joseph. The narrative highlights how God continued to be by Joseph's side, overseeing his well-being and placing him in positions of authority even within the confines of prison. This serves as a powerful reminder that even during tumultuous times when life seems incomprehensible, we can find solace in the knowledge that God is ever-present with us (Matthew 28:20). Like Joseph, we can overcome temptation and challenges knowing that we are not alone in our struggles.
