READ GENESIS 40
Dreams and detours. This could serve as the title of Joseph's memoir. We are drawn to stories of redemption, yet the challenges and setbacks that come with it are often not what we wish to experience ourselves. The twists, interruptions, and letdowns only serve to delay our hope at best and fuel our doubts at worst. Life abruptly halts our joy and optimism, just when we feel liberated to dream again and anticipate a breakthrough.
The conclusion of Genesis 40 encapsulates this sentiment: Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him. Twice, the Genesis narrator (Moses) emphasizes that Joseph was forgotten. This is meant to underscore the gravity and pain of the situation. Joseph even implores the cupbearer, 'When all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh.' But there is silence. His name goes unmentioned. Joseph remains in prison for two more years until he is finally recalled.
Feeling overlooked leaves us with a sense of invisibility, particularly when we have invested time and care into someone else, helped or ministered to them, all while neglecting our own suffering. Yet, they fail to remember us. How could they forget?
God understands this feeling. Throughout the Scriptures, He speaks of being forgotten by His people. Yet, He reassures us repeatedly that He will never abandon or forsake us. He is our constant companion, directing our paths and guiding our pauses. He is leading us towards a destination He has set for us, exactly where He intends us to be.
While others may overlook us, denying us the attention or acknowledgment we crave, God will always be there for us, never leaving, forgetting, or abandoning us. He will not overlook the delays and detours. He plans to utilize every experience and trial for His glory and the betterment of others. Consider this: God transformed Joseph from a dreamer to an interpreter of dreams. Who better to perceive the outcomes of dreams than Joseph himself? God is at work during our periods of waiting. He is present in our waiting. He has not abandoned us.
