READ EXODUS 11

GO DEEPER

Recently, we have witnessed nine different afflictions striking the Egyptians. One would think that by now, Pharaoh must have understood the message, right? However, God informs Moses that one final plague is imminent - it will result in the death of the firstborns of all Egyptians, including Pharaoh’s own son and all the livestock in Egypt.

Upon reading this, one cannot help but hope that Pharaoh will acknowledge the previous plagues, change his wicked ways, and allow the Israelites to depart peacefully. Regrettably, God reveals to Moses that Pharaoh will remain unyielding.

So far in the book of Exodus, we have gained insight into God's character. He has not only upheld His covenant with Israel but has also displayed mercy toward Pharaoh, despite his unworthiness. The Scriptures, spanning from the Old Testament to the New Testament, emphasize God’s abundant mercy and how it prompts us toward repentance. Romans 2:4 underscores God's kindness as the catalyst for our turning back to Him.

Subsequent chapters will illustrate God’s provision of protection and deliverance for the Israelites, saving them from the impending calamity against Pharaoh. Similarly, God has granted us deliverance through Jesus. Despite our moments of stubbornness, straying from God, and disregarding His signs, God’s kindness inspires us to repent. We have received mercy and grace because of God’s profound love, evident in the sending of His Son. Let us always remember that we have been spared from receiving what we truly deserve.
