READ EXODUS 10

GO DEEPER

In Exodus 10, we learn about the eighth and ninth plagues, which were swarms of locusts and complete darkness. Despite Pharaoh's stubbornness and pride causing turmoil and suffering for the Egyptians, Moses persists in demanding the release of the Israelites. Following the locust infestation, Pharaoh seems momentarily remorseful and inclined to comply with Moses' plea. However, his hardened heart prevails once more, and he refuses to let the Israelites depart.

During the ninth plague, Moses extends his hand, and an impenetrable darkness covers the land for three days. Imagine the depth of this darkness—it was not just twilight, but a profound blackness that was palpable. Imagine going about your daily tasks like laundry, farming, or leisurely activities, only to be engulfed by this palpable darkness along with your family and friends.

However, the Israelites made an exception. According to Exodus 10:23, "They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings." Imagine that—no one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived. It is as though the Light of the World was present among the people of God.

The prevailing darkness symbolizes the various challenges and uncertainties we face today. As believers in Christ, however, we have the Light of the World with us (refer to John 8:12, 9:5, and 1 John 1:5). Jesus offers illumination and optimism amidst the shadows of the world and times. Could it be that you, as a beacon of light (through Jesus), have the potential to shine brightly before others, leading them to witness your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:13-16)? We possess the light that can dispel the darkness of our world.

While a profound darkness descended upon Pharaoh and the Egyptians, God's people were guided by the light from the Lord. Let us combat the darkness and radiate the Light to a world yearning for hope and brightness.
