READ EXODUS 15

GO DEEPER

This chapter serves as a tribute to God's incredible deliverance of His chosen people from slavery, celebrating the rescue of two million individuals from Pharaoh's harsh rule. It is remarkable how a commemorative song was born to remember these extraordinary events, pass them down to future generations, and eventually be recorded in Holy Scripture. The jubilant expression of worship and adoration for God is infectious as their most trying moments transform into their greatest joys.

Appropriately titled A Song of Deliverance, the accounts in Exodus are awe-inspiring and difficult to fully comprehend. Who can fathom the splitting of the sea, with Pharaoh's army being engulfed by the waters that had previously allowed the Israelites to cross safely on dry land? One writer notes that this poignant song likely arose spontaneously as Moses guided the nation through the wilderness on the opposite side of the Red Sea, reflecting a genuine experience of salvation and the tangible power and presence of God. The Israelites' lives would forever bear witness to God's benevolence.

This chapter reflects on the wondrous deeds of the Almighty, who demonstrated His honor, glory, and praise through a series of miracles, revealing His eternal reign. Their anthem encapsulated the unmistakable characteristics of the divine being who visited them in their distress and delivered them, praising His triumphant glory, strength, victory, and role as a mighty warrior, as well as His holiness, splendor, and wonder-working nature. Their lyrics spoke of His boundless love, redemption, and provision of security and refuge, affirming that there is truly no deity like Him. The same God who rescued the Israelites orchestrated the ultimate redemption plan through His Son, encompassing all of humanity. This God, who relentlessly loves and esteems us as His treasured possessions, banishes fear and death through the rescuer, Jesus.

Ironically, despite experiencing the miraculous parting of the sea, the Israelites quickly forgot God's goodness and succumbed to unbelief and discontentment, questioning the provision of water in the desert.
