READ EXODUS 17
At this point, we should understand that the Israelites' story in Exodus reflects our own human nature. The key distinction is that their experiences were documented, unlike ours. The chapter commences with the children of God expressing dissatisfaction with their thirst and questioning the goodness of God once again.
These were the individuals whom God had miraculously liberated from Egypt, yet their faith was vulnerable to attack by Satan over a simple need for water. How could they so easily lose faith in the One who had done so much for them? Their emotions primarily shape their faith. Their circumstances heavily influence their relationship with God. The Israelites seem to adopt a "What have you done for me lately?" mentality toward both Moses and their Savior.
When we delve into this chapter, it becomes evident that they appear entitled and fragile. Rather than placing their trust in God during difficult times, they tend to give up immediately. However, if the story of our lives were being recorded, how closely would it resemble Exodus 17? How often do we succumb to temptation due to a negative mood? How frequently do we distance ourselves from God when our circumstances are unfavorable?
It is likely that we share more similarities with the Israelites than we care to acknowledge. Nonetheless, we are not bound to follow the same pattern as depicted in Exodus 17. We have the option to recall God's faithfulness when we feel parched in the desert. We can remember His promise, "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." (Hebrews 13:5). Therefore, let us not allow our emotions to dictate our faith today. Instead, let us choose to praise God even before witnessing His provision, rather than only doing so afterward.
