READ EXODUS 20

GO DEEPER

Exodus 20 illustrates God's intention to establish relationships with His creation. Prior to the events described in this chapter, the Lord approached Moses, led His people out of bondage, and reminded them of His commitments and intentions. God yearns to have intimate communion with His people and to set them apart as His own. To achieve this, He presents them with the Law: the Ten Commandments.

Upon reading the commandments, it can be disheartening for us. We are destined to transgress them, no matter how much effort we put in, how kind we are, or how frequently we attend church. We all have our imperfections. We struggle to adhere to the rules. We engage in gossip about colleagues without thinking twice. We desire what others have, both in terms of opportunities and possessions. We feel envious of our neighbor's newly renovated kitchen. We become jealous of our roommate's relationship with God, while we lack one. We repeatedly violate these commandments. Does this mean there's no hope for us? Should we even bother trying? What's the next step?

God established these commandments fully aware that we would fail to abide by them. He provided us with these laws to help us comprehend sin. He utilizes these commandments as building blocks for His grand design. To bridge the gap of our insufficiency and brokenness, He bestowed upon us His son, Jesus, who lived, died, and was resurrected so that we could walk in righteousness and freedom with the Lord despite not deserving it. These commandments serve as a reminder of our inability to earn or strive for our salvation, but fortunately, that isn't the conclusion of our narrative. We serve a God who displays unwavering love for His people.

Unlike pagan deities, our God does not assess our worth based on flawlessness, emotions, or achievements. Instead, He pardons us for our failures to meet His standards.

Bless the Lord, we need not be alienated from God due to our errors; rather, we can take after Moses' lead in verse 20 by drawing closer to God amid the darkness.
