READ LEVITICUS 23
Leviticus is a book that outlines regulations and laws that the people had to abide by before the arrival of Jesus to fulfill these laws. The text has discussed instructions for priests, animal sacrifices, and offerings. However, in this chapter, the Israelites are advised to take a break and enjoy a feast.
The practice of observing a Sabbath day, resting on the seventh day, not only provided physical rest but also demonstrated their faith in God's provision as they refrained from working and relied on what had already been prepared. The term "sacred assembly" (or solemn assembly) is emphasized multiple times in this brief chapter, signifying gatherings for feasts, festivals, or other holy events, described as a day of restraint in some Hebrew translations.
The observance of the Sabbath shows a cessation from work, demonstrating trust in God's provision, which is essential for complete rest. By exercising this trust, we can learn to say no to certain things and prioritize what is truly important to Jesus. This way, we can reject striving and embrace a peaceful mind as we honor the God we serve.
An important theme that emerges from these feasts, Sabbaths, and holy days is gratitude. During these celebrations, the Israelites reflect on the blessings provided by the Lord. On the Sabbath, they meditate on the provisions and promises of God. In all holy gatherings, they express their reverence and gratitude towards God.
