READ LEVITICUS 24

GO DEEPER

This chapter transitions from providing instructions on worshiping in the tabernacle to narrating the account of a man who is executed by stoning for committing blasphemy and cursing. Initially, this severe punishment for what may seem like a minor offense can be bewildering. Why would a man's words lead to such a violent repercussion? What constitutes blasphemy, and why does it result in the man's death?

To the Hebrews, a name was not merely a label but a representation of a person's character. Misusing God's name is tantamount to attacking His very essence. Blasphemy is significant because the nature of God is significant.

In our society, there is a barrage of conflicting messages about God's character. We are inundated with assertions from social media, public figures, and even acquaintances concerning the identity of God. As a result, we constantly struggle to discern the truth about God amidst the noise. These contradictory messages can leave us perplexed about God's nature and, consequently, our own identities. Understanding the true nature of God and His character holds more importance than we may realize. It is crucial to comprehend God in order to correctly direct our worship towards Him and to understand His feelings towards us. Fortunately, through the Scriptures, God has revealed Himself to us through the person of Jesus (John 14:8-11).

Verses 17 to 21 delve into the repercussions of taking a human life, illustrating that God views this offense just as gravely as blasphemy. Genesis 1:27 states, "So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created he them." We are created in the image of God. He has bestowed life upon us and designed us to reflect His likeness. God values our lives as much as He values His own identity. Unlike any other facet of creation, we mirror God in a distinctive and priceless manner. God desires to reveal Himself to us, encouraging us to approach Him with honor and respect and to esteem the image of humanity as we all bear His likeness.

Let us strive to recognize and appreciate the sanctity of God, marvel at His essence, and live in a manner that reveres His image in those surrounding us.
