READ EXODUS 35

GO DEEPER

In Exodus 35, Moses continues to receive guidance from the Lord regarding the tabernacle and its items. In verse 5, Moses addresses the Israelites and makes a declaration, "Take ye from among you an offering unto the LORD: whosoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, an offering of the LORD . . "  God could have effortlessly constructed the tabernacle by Himself, but He decided to involve His people in the process! Moses not only lists the materials required (such as gold, silver, bronze, fabrics, animal skins, oil, etc.), but also mentions the specific skills needed (construction of hooks and frames, a veil, aromatic incense, and more!).

After Moses enumerates all the items required by the Lord, the Israelites leave Moses' presence and begin to act. Verse 21 commences with "And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the LORD's offering . . ."  God took the first step, and His followers followed suit. They brought valuable possessions such as brooches, earrings, and signet rings. They also contributed fine fabrics, precious animal hides, and various types of wood. Talented artisans willingly offered their skills to help build the tabernacle, demonstrating their generosity and dedication.

It is common for us to cling too tightly to what we believe belongs to us. Our outlook shifts when we understand that everything already belongs to God, and these chances are occasions for us to worship. According to verse 29, the individuals offered these items willingly to the Lord. Their response was heartfelt, not motivated by duty or a desire for gain. 2 Corinthians 9:7 also emphasizes this perspective: "Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver."

The Israelites joyfully and willingly presented their offerings to the Lord, demonstrating heartfelt gratitude by offering the finest possessions and skills they had. In doing so, they honored God for His past and future blessings. They understood the importance of giving their utmost to God, showing their devotion through cheerful giving. May we also be attentive to God's guidance and obediently give with joy when prompted by His spirit.
