READ EXODUS 25

GO DEEPER

This chapter mentions God's desire to build an elaborate sanctuary. He wants it to be adorned with gold, silver, bronze, and even goat hair, for some undisclosed reason. The purpose is to establish a significant edifice dedicated to Himself. One cannot help but ponder: Why doesn't He simply create it Himself? Why not have the Israelites chance upon a pre-made sanctuary crafted with exquisite materials beyond their imagination? Wouldn't that be more extraordinary? However, rather than taking matters into His own hands, God instructs Moses to solicit offerings from everyone whose heart prompts them to give. (v 2).

What could be the rationale behind God's approach? Clearly, He does not require offerings from the Israelites. Yet, He enlists their assistance in providing for the sanctuary to involve them in a meaningful relationship. God emphasizes that, despite His ability to perform miracles, it does not imply that He always will. At times, He may part the seas, while at others, He might task us with building a sanctuary independently.

God does not want the Israelites to grow accustomed to a God who does everything for them. He desires them to cultivate the practice of actively participating in the relationship. Such involvement ensures that they do not abandon faith when faced with challenges. By involving them in the sanctuary's construction, they assert that this God is truly theirs. It is not just a matter of God selecting them; through their offerings of precious materials, they express their conscious choice of Him. These offerings unite their hearts with God's and serve as a reminder that while some may rely on riches, they place their trust in the name of the Lord.
