READ EXODUS 28

GO DEEPER

In reading this chapter, it is evident the meticulous attention and thoroughness with which God provides instructions to the Israelites. In the book of Exodus, God not only dictates the proper way for the Israelites to worship Him and the designated places for worship, but also, in chapter 28, He outlines in great detail the attire and duties of the priests who will minister to the people of Israel.

Instead of God giving the priests instructions about their duties and roles as expected, He decides to focus on describing the priests' attire in detail, which takes up the entire chapter. The clothing of the priests was essential in reflecting their sanctity, holiness, and glory. Each piece of clothing had a specific meaning and function. God meticulously outlines the dress code for the priesthood, including items like a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a woven tunic, a turban, and a sash.

In the initial four verses, God mentions three times the importance of priests serving Him directly. Whether under the old or new covenants, the foremost duty of priests is to minister to God Himself. Through intricate clothing designs, God symbolically instructs priests to guide the community toward a closer relationship with Him. While their service is primarily focused on God, priests are reminded to stay connected to the people by carrying their names on their shoulders and close to their hearts.

The priesthood is a traditional establishment that is passed down through generations and requires being born into it. Only those who are descendants of Aaron are recognized as priests. Being a part of the priesthood is not about seeking personal ambition or glory; rather, it is a divine vocation that can only be initiated by God's calling and invitation. We have the opportunity to join the priesthood by following Jesus, our esteemed High Priest. This privilege is not something we can achieve through our efforts or actions but is freely granted to us through the sacrificial death of Jesus on our behalf.
