GO DEEPER
The beginning of the book of Joshua signifies a crucial moment in the history of Israel. The people must adjust to a new reality after the death of their long-standing leader, Moses, who had guided them for many years. Moses used to be the intermediary between the people and God, nurturing their spiritual connection. With Moses no longer present, the responsibility now falls on Joshua to cultivate his own personal relationship with God. Additionally, he must also find the courage to obediently follow God's directions. The entire nation is relying on Joshua to uphold their connection with God. The stakes are high!
One key takeaway from this chapter is that Joshua must now depend on his faithfulness rather than relying on someone else's. Even though Moses had a strong connection with God, it doesn't guarantee that Joshua will experience the same level of closeness. Joshua needs to personally nurture his faith and draw strength from God, rather than expecting it from another human leader.
There are times in our lives when we sense that God is delivering us the same directive He gave to Joshua in this chapter: It's time for you to stop depending on someone else's loyalty. Don't delay for your pastor to instruct you in the Bible. Don't wait for another person to spread the gospel to your friend. Don't wait for your spouse to guide your children. Today, you have the opportunity to take responsibility for your faith. God has summoned you to bravely follow Him. Cease waiting for someone else to perform the duty that God has entrusted to you. Today, muster up your strength and courage and follow God!
