READ JOSHUA 2

GO DEEPER

Joshua initiates a covert operation in chapter two. Two spies are assigned by Joshua with a dual mission: to ensure their safety and gather intelligence about Jericho. Reflect on this scenario briefly. Joshua, a former spy, dispatched two operatives. He was fully aware of the risks involved and the bravery and resilience needed. It's important to recognize the significance of how our past and trials can serve as inspiration and preparation for others. Joshua's own background made him the ideal mentor for these two individuals.

Despite being a Canaanite prostitute, Rahab reveres YHWH, the One true God. She is aware of His acts of rescue, strength, and compassion, demonstrating a genuine and intimate faith and understanding of God. Confronted with a moral dilemma of either deceiving or harming God's messengers, Rahab chooses the option that honors God the most—protecting His followers. She shelters the spies, ensuring their safety, and strikes a pact with them to secure protection for herself and her family during the impending battle.

The importance of this woman's background and role in God's plan for His Kingdom is immeasurable. The success of the spies' mission depends on the actions of a woman, who is not just any woman, but a prostitute—someone who is considered a traitor, outsider, and foreigner to the Hebrew people. Despite this, the Bible commends her twice for her faithfulness and even includes her in Jesus' genealogy.

Her narrative offers encouragement to everyone. The Bible consistently mentions Rahab's profession as a prostitute, even in the New Testament. The reiteration holds significance. It serves as a reminder that regardless of our sinful past, God is capable of accomplishing remarkable deeds through those who seek forgiveness and embrace faith in Him. God is ever ready to show mercy to the repentant, those who submit their lives to Him. He takes pleasure in rescuing and utilizing the overlooked, the downtrodden, and the shamed.
