READ JOSHUA 5
GO DEEPER
In the past few days, we have reviewed the events that transpired after the passing of Moses as the Israelites drew near to the Promised Land. With Joshua leading the way in Joshua 5, we observe that Israel has reached the Promised Land and is prepared to embark on their conquest. This chapter emphasizes significant elements such as the reinstatement of circumcision and the observance of Passover. Circumcision served as a symbol of Israel's covenant relationship with God, while Passover commemorated Israel's deliverance from bondage in Egypt. This is akin to the concepts of baptism and the Lord's Supper in the New Testament. Baptism signifies our covenant relationship with God (refer to Colossians 2:11-12), and the Lord's Supper represents our redemption (refer to Matthew 26:18-19).
The chapter concludes with a unique meeting between Joshua and the leader of the Lord's army. Joshua is reminded of his dependence on the Lord for everything. This meeting mirrors Moses' encounter with God at the burning bush in Exodus 3, where they were instructed to remove their shoes and bow in respect as they were in the presence of Yahweh on sacred ground. Joshua acknowledges his inadequacy in the face of God's powerful presence.
We must approach God with reverence, acknowledging His greatness that exceeds our comprehension. Joshua demonstrates a humble posture of surrender before engaging in battle, acknowledging God's authority. Effective leaders acknowledge their dependence on a higher power, as seen in Joshua's encounter with the "commander of the army of the LORD." Like Joshua and the Israelites facing Jericho, we will encounter situations requiring God's guidance, revealing whether we rely on our strength or God's power.
