READ DEUTERONOMY 14

GO DEEPER

In this chapter, there are numerous guidelines to follow; however, God's wisdom always serves the best interests of those who adhere to it. He wanted to protect His people's health and separate them from the era's idolatrous customs. God always comprehends the bigger picture.

Recall the frustration you felt when you had disagreements with your parents over something and they responded with, "I am saying no because you belong to me." As we grew older, we came to realize that they were correct. The initial verse in Deuteronomy 14 conveys a similar and essential reasoning behind the other rules and guidelines in the chapter: "You are the children of the Lord your God."

The first 21 verses contain instructions from God regarding animals, fish, and birds. It is important to acknowledge that throughout human history, hunting and fishing were essential for survival until relatively recently. Even today, many still rely on hunting and fishing for sustenance. Some see these activities as a way to connect with God's creation and a means of obtaining food. Regardless, engaging in hunting and fishing requires specific skills, knowledge, and adherence to laws. Deuteronomy 14:2 provided the Israelites with four reasons to obey God's laws when it comes to food and daily life: they were considered God's children, a holy people, chosen by God, and cherished by God. By accepting and following Christ as our spiritual leader and rescuer, we too can lay claim to these four fundamental truths.

Verses 22-28 conclude the chapter by providing specific guidance on tithing. It was required to allocate one-tenth of the finest produce and animals to show respect for God at the temple. Regardless of the temple's proximity, there was a special law requirement to honor God in this manner. Verse 23 mentions the importance of the act, stating, "so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always." The Israelites received instructions to accumulate tithes for the local Levites and the needy in their community over a three-year period. The lesson here is clear: generous giving is a fundamental aspect of our faith that will lead us to honor God with all that He has bestowed upon us. When giving becomes a source of joy for us, its positive impact will greatly benefit the church and its ministries.

God promises in the latter part of Deuteronomy 14:29 that He will bless all the work of your hands so that you may prosper, ". . .  that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest." We are grateful to God for choosing us, and we should strive to be faithful in sharing the blessings He has bestowed upon us.
