READ DEUTERONOMY 15

GO DEEPER

In Deuteronomy 15, Moses provides guidance on living a life of worship and emphasizes the importance of following God's will, especially in relation to handling money. He cautions against the temptation of greed, acknowledging that even with good intentions, it is a common struggle for humanity. Within this chapter, Moses specifically discusses temptations related to generosity.

Initially, he notes that it is simple to be generous when we expect to gain something in return, whether it be in terms of money, social status, emotional fulfillment, or any other form of reward. Moses highlights the temptation faced by the Israelites to hold back from giving just before the commencement of the seventh year, which is when debts are forgiven. God's intention for His followers is to give selflessly, even when there is no expectation of receiving anything in exchange. Moses instructs the people to be charitable and offer assistance, even in cases where they are aware that the debt will ultimately be erased.

Moses emphasizes the importance of giving wholeheartedly rather than begrudgingly. He emphasizes the significance of having the right mindset along with actions in generosity. Moses stresses the importance of giving not only willingly but also without reservation. First Samuel 16:7 illustrates that God values the heart more than outward appearances. God is not concerned with worldly success but focuses on how we show kindness and generosity toward others. Caring for the poor is not just a suggestion but a commandment, urging us to be generous toward those in need. "For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land." (v 11).

Moses intentionally kept his guidance on how to practice generosity vague. The concept of being "open-handed" may vary for each individual. Generosity can be expressed in numerous ways. Nevertheless, the act of giving without expecting anything in return distinguishes the people of God. These teachings are challenging and go against the societal norm of being selfish. This behavior does not align with our basic survival instincts. Many individuals believe that having enough money provides safety and happiness, placing their trust in their finances. However, Scripture consistently emphasizes the significance of caring for the poor in the eyes of God. By showing love to the impoverished, we are also expressing love for Him.
